How sports harm the planet earth
We are living in the global
village where many things are depend on each other but sometimes they are threat to
each other as well. Here I am talking about the global warming and sports,
these two terminologies are very different from each other but are interlinked.
A gradual increase in the overall temperature of the earth's atmosphere
generally attributed to the greenhouse effect caused by increased levels of
carbon dioxide, CFCs, and other pollutants. While ‘sport’ are all forms of
physical activity that contribute to physical fitness, mental well-being and
social interaction. These include: play; recreation; organized, casual or
competitive sport; and indigenous sports or games.” Here we observe that these
two terminologies are unique from each other but actually they are not. The
sports like skydiving, soccer, car racing, skiing, drag board racing and golf
are the most dangerous sports which adversely effect the environment by
releasing different gases, consuming the large amount of water, release
different harmful chemicals to water and green plants are cut down for stadiums
and skiing purposes. Sports is very essential for our health while the health
of earth is the primary for all human beings the question that stuck in my mind
is Modern life is hard. Without exercise, health suffers, but what do you do if
your favorite physical activity hurts the environment as well? After getting
this question in my mind I got deep interest in this topic and I am going to
share some points on this topic. The sports federations are responsible to have
proper check and balance of the sport
activities and their effects on the environment. The Olympic Movement was one
of the first organizations to pick up the United Nations Conference on
Environment and Development (UNCED) baton. Within six weeks, at the Games of
the XXV Olympiad (Barcelona 1992), International Sports Federations (IFs) and
National Olympic Committees (NOCs) signed the Earth Pledge, committing to
making the Earth a safe place. This was followed by the IOC’s partnership
forged in 1994 with the United Nation Environment Programmed (UNEP) .We know
the Olympic games is the biggest event of sports so Since the notion of sustainability was
introduced to the Olympic Charter, the International Olympic Committee has been
anxious to reverse the negative environmental image of the Olympics Games. From
1994, potential host cities have been obliged to demonstrate their commitment
to a Green Games and this concept has become one of the fundamental aspects of
the Olympics process. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has thereby
established itself as one of the leading bodies in the pursuit of environmental
stability. There are hundreds of problems just because of sports. Some sports
are simply incompatible with any likely solution to the problem. The most
obvious example is motor racing. There is a direct relationship between an
engine's performance and the amount of greenhouse gases it produces: the faster
the car, the quicker it cooks the planet. At the moment, there is no
foreseeable means by which a racing car's emissions can be brought down by 90
per cent within the necessary time frame. Bio diesel currently causes more harm
to people and the environment than good, as it pushes up food prices and
encourages the felling of tropical forests. One day - perhaps in 20 or 30 years
- racing cars might run on hydrogen or electricity. Furthermore, the industries
where the sport goods are manufactured are also reason behind the change in
climate. The harm gases releases by these industries are mixed with air and
helps in air pollution and the poisonous chemicals are also release by the industries which mixed with the sea
water because most of the industries are establish near the sea or river side.
So in this way industries are effecting our ecosystem. Another important point
is the deforestation which is the very biggest reason of todays global warming
, trees are cut down for the purpose of sports infrastructure and also use in
the manufacturing of sports goods In different industries in the world. So
these all points will be in consideration to conduct this research.
In addition to this Indirect factors such as
the use of cars to travel to and from sports facilities( stadiums and grounds).
Spectators who make a lot of noise cause the noise pollution. Another important
point is about the water sports ,water games disturb the aquatic life, Cross
country races cause habitat loss and mountain climbing effects the rocks
sometimes.
Apart from that Lights use in stadiums can
increase the heat of the environment , Large amount of natural resources
are use
wood and energy for the purpose of sports goods manufacturing and infrastructure.
People also use to bring the food and drink stuff and left the garbage in
stadium which cause voluminous trash. There
is a direct relationship between an engine's performance and the amount of
greenhouse gases it produces: the faster the car, the quicker it cooks the
planet. Car racing Desert car competitions, Ski slopes, for instance, disrupt fragile alpine
ecosystems, while snowmobiles spew exhaust fumes into the air. Golf courses
sprawl across the land, and consume large amounts of pesticides and water,
while parking lots for stadiums and arenas useless. The 2006 Super Bowl in
Detroit produced 500 tons of the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide (from
transportation and utility usage), while the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens
produced half a million tons in two weeks—roughly comparable to what a city of
1 million people would emit over a similar period. Each match during the 2006
World Cup this summer will use up to 3 million kilowatt-hours of energy
(similar to the annual consumption of 700 European households), and produce an
estimated 5–10 tons of trash.
From the last 3 months all sports activities are
cancelled and the earth planet is healing. So this is all about the sports and
how it effects the earth planet. I will be there so with some more points.
Stay safe and stay home.
